Podcasting is actually pretty simple.  It takes a computer, a microphone (possibly the internal microphone on your computer), some audio recording software, and an idea.  You will also need a service to host your podcast. Technically, you could also record your audio on a smart device as well.

Now, you could go even further into video podcasting, complete with interviewees from across the country, background audio, audio editing software, noise-cancelling microphones, green screen backgrounds, and more … but that’s for another article. We’re keeping it simple, today!

  • THE COMPUTER
Most modern computers are able to record audio.  You will want to make sure that you have enough hard drive space to save your audio.  A typical minute of audio will range from 256KB to 2MB, depending on your settings.
  • THE MICROPHONE
Yes, I did mention that your internal microphone could technically record a podcast.  You might experience the microphone picking up the low hum of your computer and its exhaust.  A USB microphone is worth the investment. And, spending a few extra dollars to get a directional microphone, which can be “pointed” towards you, can also help in preventing extra noise in being picked up.
  • AUDIO RECORDING SOFTWARE
Looking for a free way to record audio?  Use “Voice Memos” on your Mac or “Windows Sound Recorder” on PC.
  • A SERVICE TO HOST YOUR PODCAST
A simple “podcast hosting” search can help turn up examples of potential hosts.  I’ve personally used Podbean, which is actually pretty simple to use.  These hosts will typically charge a per-month or per-year fee.  Now, your podcast hosts will be able to help you connect your podcast to Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and more.  Apple and the other providers do not charge a fee (at the time or writing).
  • AN IDEA
Now, there are many podcasts out there on a handful of subjects.  The key to success is to find something your passionate about, something you can provide expertise about, and something you can turn into multiple broadcasts.  Just like social media and blogging, persistence is important.

Creating a podcast is a great way to advertise your business or organization.  In general, podcast listeners typically hit the 18-44 age range and are typically split between genders.  Specific demographics truly come down to the type of podcast.
